Anchor text is one of those things people either ignore completely or obsess over to the point of paralysis. Neither works. Ignore it and your profile ends up looking like everyone bought the same exact match anchor. Obsess over it and you never place a link at all. There is a calmer middle, and it is not complicated.
The goal is simple. When someone, human or algorithm, looks at the links pointing to your site, the picture should look like something that happened naturally over time. Real editors link in lots of different ways. Some use your brand name. Some link the word here. Some describe what they are linking to. Your profile should show that same variety.
Start with your current profile, not a template
Before you decide what to build, look at what you already have. Pull your existing backlinks and sort the anchors into buckets. You will usually find one of two problems: either almost everything is branded and naked, which is safe but not helping you rank, or a handful of exact match anchors are stacked on one page, which is the pattern that gets sites into trouble.
Whatever you find, the plan is to correct toward balance, not to chase a magic ratio you read on a forum. Ratios are a guide, not a law.
The five buckets that matter
- Branded: your company name. The safest anchor there is.
- Naked URL: the raw web address. Common and low risk.
- Generic: words like read more or this guide. They add variety.
- Partial match: your keyword inside a longer, natural phrase. Most of your ranking pressure lives here.
- Exact match: the keyword on its own. Powerful, which is why it should be the smallest slice.
Weight toward the page you are building
Spread anchors across your target pages rather than piling them onto one URL. Five exact match anchors pointing at a single page is a louder signal than the same five spread across a homepage, a service page and two posts.
The short version
Look at what you have, correct toward variety, keep exact match rare, and spread everything across more than one page. Do that consistently and there will be nothing unnatural for a filter to catch.
